The 5 Inch Wasp

This is a species of giant wasp known as the Ichneumon Wasp. This particular one was over 5 inches long, including the 3 inch "stinger" (really a type of drill used to bore through tree bark to lay its eggs). They look HUGE and very intimidating, but are totally harmless.
My neighbor found this one in her backyard and trapped it in a jar, then came and got me to take pictures.
