Thanks to movies like City of God and Bus 174, the world now knows something about the violence and exclusion suffered by people who live in the favelas (urban shantytowns) of Rio de Janeiro, but the most violent city in Brazil is really Recife, on the country's northeastern coast. Endemic poverty, the world's second worst distribution of income, and anarchic gang wars make the city almost unlivable for the poor; but at the same time, Recife's culture is among the richest in the world, with amazing african and indigenous dances and rhythms, a long history of popular poetry, and a strong tradition of popular education.
DJ Big -- artist, composer, and educator at Pé no Chão -- asked Shine a Light to finance an innovative educational project: to record a CD of a dozen street rappers, boys and girls who work, live, and play on the street and who use rhyme as a way to understand and change their world. PeaceTones Brazil (City of Rhyme) makes that music available in a format that helps fund community development projects in Recife.

PeaceTones is a pilot project geared towards exploring issues relating to peace building, the rule of law, and international e-commerce through the distribution of digital media. This initiative combines the efforts of InternetBar (IBO), Subway Records, Openworld, ODRWorld and others to lower digital and economic barriers to entry for e-commerce markets. PeaceTones will help artists in frontier (developing) economies by providing digital copies of their work to buyers around the world via online platforms (such as iTunes) and globally available technology.
The project participants are artists from developing economies, remote areas, and conflict zones. InternetBar works with students and participants to digitalize their art. This can mean photographing paintings, recording music, capturing local nature sounds, folk tales, etc. Once digitized, the art is then organized into the form of albums which are sold online. The proceeds are sent back to the participants in their respective countries in intervals, creating revenues for project participants and their communities.
InternetBar Organization (IBO) is a non-profit organization that uses technology and 'rule of law' to promote human rights and alleviate poverty by supporting e-commerce across the digital divide.
